Managers' Forum ~ Book Reviews
This book discusses the appropriate time to use humor in your conversation when traveling abroad, either for business or pleasure. The book is based on the two premises that "laughter has no accent" and the smile is a form of communication that is understood no matter where you travel in the world. It is divided into humorous categories ranging from Words (chapter 1) to Misunderstandings (chapter 12) and covers almost all situations in between. The author, Roger E. Axtell, is the former Vice President of Worldwide Marketing for The Parker Pen Company. He spent more than thirty years traveling and living abroad and draws upon his own experiences as well as those of others to fill the book with humorous stories to make his point.
I found the book to be particularly insightful into common everyday situations where misunderstandings could take place because of the innocent use of inappropriate humor. The thing we as Americans have a tendency to
forget is that not everybody in the world 'sees and hears' things the same as we do. An important point to remember is that you don't have to be in a foreign country to offend somebody of a different culture with 'American humor'. The author doesn't advocate eliminating the use of humor in communication, just the spontaneous use of it. He makes the point repeatedly to 'test the waters' before springing a joke or humorous anecdote on your audience. Even the best intentioned communications can often lead to misunderstanding. An additional point to remember is that the ability to laugh at your own fax pas is a trait that is widely respected in all
cultures. The context of the book, while very insightful, was also enjoyable to read. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the stories. What made it even more interesting is the examples could (and probably have) happened to all of at one time or another. I think this book could provide valuable insight for not only the world traveler, but to any individual who wants to improve their communication skills.
