Managers' Forum ~ Website ReviewsJapanese Economic Foundation, JEF
Review by: Nadège Gella Jean-PierreJapanese Economic Foundation, or JEF, is a very useful website for businesses
interested in doing business in Japan. This website offers various vital links
for business information, specifically about Japan. JEF is primarily a foundation
designed to help solve the existing trade frictions and prevent future misunderstandings.
JEF pays special attention to the machinery industry. Their goals are to promote
an improved understanding of the actual state of Japan's economy, trade, economics
policy and industry. JEF sponsors visits abroad by Japanese policymakers and
business executives, as well as inviting leading foreign economic policymakers
and executives to Japan. This foundation also publishes a magazine in English
on Japan's trade and industry. JEF makes other publications on Japanese industry
available, and also conducts research on the machinery industry, trade, economic
policy and economies of other countries.
JEF provides a link to up-to-date information form MITI, which is the Japanese
Government's Ministry of International Trade and Industry. They provide news
from MITI in English. MITI publishes information on Japanese economic policy,
trade policy, automotive issues, speeches, different press conferences, film
issue, as well as many more topics. MITI also publishes a list of press presentations,
and an English publication list.
JEF offers the Journal of Japanese Trade and Industry, with articles in English
about current issues in the business world. I, for example, read an article
about how individual investors are unprotected in Japan. This article talked
about the deregulation of foreign exchange in Japan and the repercussions felt
by the individual investors.
JEF also provides a section of the 2005 World Exposition in Japan. They posted
information on the QUAD Trade Ministers Meeting between Japan, the US, Canada
and the E.U. Information on APEC is also posted.
JEF has a helpful list of links to other servers including MITI and homepages
of other Ministries, agencies and local governments. JEF provides links to
JETRO, which is Japan External Trade Organization. JETRO is a nonprofit organization
dedicated to promoting the mutual beneficial trade and economic relations between
Japan and other countries. The Japanese government supports this organization.
Finally, JEF offers links to the economic WWW servers in Japan and WWW servers
of various international organizations and foreign governments.
JEF is a very practical website for businesses interested in up-to-date
information on Japanese trade, economics and industry. This website provides
business information focused specifically on Japan for companies and organizations
all over the world. JEF is an excellent tool for global business, and I enthusiastically
recommend this web site.
