United Nations Economic and Social Commission
 for
Asia and the Pacific
Review by: Norsafinas Md Saad

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is the
main organization for United Nations (UN) activities in Asia and the Pacific
region. Established in 1947 in Shanghai, China, ESCAP has been set up as an
agent to bring about 830 million people in the region into the economic
growth and help them to have a better standard of living - social and
economic development. Today, ESCAP is located in Bangkok and has become the
largest of the five UN Regional Commissions, comprising 51 members and
representing 60% of the world. Its members include Japan and Autralia; the
dynamic 'tiger' economies such as Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and
other countries that are undergoing economic growth transition.

This web site provides resources and updates such as:

1)   1999 ESCAP population data sheet
2)   Statistics
3)   Local government in Asia and the Pacific
4)   UN Asia-Pacific news
5)   Development research and policy analysis
6)   Population, rural and urban development
7)   Environment and natural resources development
8)   International trade and economic cooperation
9)   Social development
10)  Transport, communications, tourism, and
     infrastructure development

This site would be useful for business people to seek the latest updated
data and reliable information about Asia and the Pacific region. With its
main focus on economic and social development, statistics, physical
planning, and policy management, ESCAP could be the main informer to provide
in-depth anylysis and issues in this region: causes and consequences,
reponses and challenges.
