Managers' Forum ~ Website Reviews
While looking around the World Wide Web, I was able to find numerous sites
that could have pertinent intercultural skills content. I have decided on
one sight that has many interesting articles and interviews. The sight is
called The Edge. It can be found at Kumo.swcp.com/biz/the edge/.Some of the many choices that are available within the site are academic
articles and essays, interviews with guests in the intercultural arena,
reviews and introductions, current events, and courses available through
various schools.I looked through many of the areas and found an interview by Krishna P.
Kundath. Ms Kundath is interviewing Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz via the Internet.
The interview discusses topics such as where have we been? And where are we
going? Ms. Leeds-Hurwitz is not an expert on intercultural skills but more of
an expert on intercultural communication. She defines her studies mostly on
intercultural communication and its history, including cultural anthropology
and its history, with a little bit of sociology. Ms. Leed-Hurwitz is quick
to point out that the strands of ICR is of a different origin. Intercultural
communication had its beginning within the Foreign Service in the 40's &
50's. This was an effort to teach American diplomats how to cope with
intercultural differences. The interviewee continues on with questions
regarding Ms. Leeds-Hurwitz background and thoughts on roles of society in
ICR and the direction it will proceed next. Another question asked that I
found interesting was "Where do you see the study of ICR going?" Ms.
Leed-Hurwitz replies that "we need to pay far more attention to interactions
between members of different cultures, rather than performing additional
comparative analysis of how members of a different cultures do things."
Although I agree with Ms. Leeds-Hurwitz answer, I think we need to do both. The Edge has many more interesting areas to explore and I will do that as
more time allows.References: The Edge can be found at (http://www.Kumo.swcp.com/biz/theedge/).
